The pace of this book slowly ramps up in the opening chapters, as it has been through the previous 2 books, and suddenly, the brakes really come off. With this book, I found writing space combat was more fun than flying it in a computer game! And just as exhausting. Some new characters appear, and the names of several may surprise those who read outside of Sci-Fi. But they wanted to be called who they are, so I obliged them. As I say in the beginning of each book, the references to Science Fiction are for me, a form of tribute to what has gone before, which has shaped who I am now. But not only Sci-Fi. As a student of war in my younger years, I read widely in different series, and some of this is coming out in my writing now as well. The links are in the back. Edit Jan 16 : At the time I began writing Send in the Hero, it was supposed to be the concluding chapter in the first trilogy. Instead, it became the first chapter in its own trilogy within a five book story arc. In effect, it took on a life of its own. This series was designed to be novel length within a specific size range, in terms of number of words in each book. Instead of taking a lot longer to write a single very long novel, I chose to release it as separate novels in the same size range as the original two. This was partly due to reader feedback asking when the next book would be out. So three became four, and then five. It simply happened that way - it wasn't planned. And where each ends was determined partly by book size, and by where the sub-plot changed focus. Send in the Hero begins the Midgard War Defensive stage. Make or Break the Hero moves the war into the Offensive stage. Hail the Hero deals with the aftermath, and returning the main characters back to their starting point, ready for what comes next. As such, all three books should be considered as an ongoing trilogy, which ends Part One of the larger story.
